What can happen after surgery?
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in males and there is generally a good recovery rate, around 85% remain cancer free after 5 years.

One treatment for prostate cancer is an operation called a prostatectomy. This involves the removal of the prostate gland either through the tummy (abdomen) or from a cut between the scrotum and anus.

One of the side effects of surgery can be incontinence. About 20% of men do have some problems with incontinence following their surgery. Most of these problems are temporary and with time they will sort themselves out but a small number of people, around 5%, have more serious and long terms problems.

Why does incontinence after prostate surgery happen?
The prostate gland is a male reproductive organ which is located at the base of the bladder. The urethra passes through the centre of the prostate gland and where the bladder and urethra meet there is a ring of muscles known as the bladder neck sphincter. The bladder neck sphincter allows urine to be passed through the urethra when told to do so by the brain, but if the bladder neck sphincter is damaged during prostate surgery then incontinence may result.
