Some years ago our client attended a cosmetic dentist due to concerns about the appearance of several of his teeth which had previously undergone a significant amount of restorative dental work.
X-rays were taken of our client’s teeth and he was provided with a number of alternative treatment options.
Our client agreed to undergo a crown lengthening procedure - the teeth in question were prepared for new crowns and several weeks later, the crowns were fitted.
All seemed well initially, but several years later whilst attending upon a different dentist, it was discovered that an abscess had formed on one of the previously crowned teeth.
Further investigation in respect of this particular tooth revealed that some of the teeth which had been treated several years earlier had clearly not been suitable for crown replacement and crown lengthening due to poor prognosis.
In light of this, the original treating dentist had failed to offer or recommend extraction of these particular teeth, and their replacement with an implant or bridge. Our own independent dental expert provided evidence that such a treatment option would have been the best way forward but this option was never presented to our client at the time.
As a result of the negligent dental treatment, our client suffered pain and discomfort unnecessarily for several years.

We delivered a Letter of Claim to the dentist on behalf of our client. Shortly after the Letter of Claim had been sent, we received an offer of settlement from the treating dentist’s indemnity insurer which led to settlement of our client’s compensation claim shortly thereafter.
