As an employer, you should have a clear and effective Grievance Policy that tells staff what procedure should be followed. This includes how to resolve any complaints informally, and a legally compliant process for dealing with more serious grievances.

Failure to comply with grievance procedures

A failure to comply with your grievance procedure could have financial consequences – for you or your staff – in the Employment Tribunal.  Staff don’t always use the word ‘grievance’ when making a complaint and so it is important you understand when you need to deal with something as a formal grievance.
