Sales Calls

Not many people are delighted to receive sales calls from double-glazing salesmen and the like at work or at home. At the end of June a new method for businesses to restrict the number of such calls came into being - the Corporate Telephone Preference Service.

Marti Burgess, a solicitor in our Company Commercial Department, says: “There are quite strict laws now in this field and if you do engage in direct marketing whether it is by telephone, fax, email or even door to door visits you should take regular legal advice because the legislation has been altered recently. At the end of last year the laws on unsolicited emails changed and in most cases now no emails can be sent without the permission of the recipient. The new Corporate Telephone Preference Service was set up under the same regulations but took a few months to get off the ground. Previously the telephone preference service was voluntary and only benefited individuals. Now all of those engaged in telesales must check the register which is being operated by the Direct Marketing Agency before making calls.

We can advise you on issues such as how this affects your business, how you need to change your practices and procedures and how the Data Protection Act 1998 also has an impact in this area.”
