Discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation
The Bristol County Court has ruled in one of the first cases to be decided under the Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007. The court held that a hotel discriminated against gay civil partners on the grounds of their sexual orientation and awarded them compensation.
The hotel would only let double rooms to married heterosexual couples. The hotel owners said their refusal to accommodate homosexual couples in a double room was not based on sexual orientation in itself, but on the hotel owners' belief that sexual relations outside marriage were sinful.
