Further fines for serious data protection breaches

The Information Commissoner's Office has imposed two more fines on councils for serious breaches of the Data Protection Act 1998. Both breaches arose from the theft of a laptop holding unencrypted sensitive personal information.

 

 

Ealing Council provided an out-of-hours service on behalf of both councils, operated by staff who worked from home. Two laptops containing the details of 1,700 individuals were stolen from an employee's home. Both laptops were password-protected but unencrypted, although this was in breach of both councils' policies.
