In 2009 the Bristol Royal Infirmary sent the tests of some 3,500 patients for independent checking amid fears of widespread misdiagnosis of cancer. The cases concern those samples tested by pathologists between 2000 and 2008, at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the BRI and St Michael's Hospital.
The review was sparked by neighbouring North Bristol NHS Trust which had referred some of the patients involved and then followed up their test results. Around 15 of their patients are thought to have been given wrong diagnoses.
Metcalfes have experience of assisting Claimants whose lives have been affected by a misdiagnosis of cancer. A delay in receiving the appropriate treatment can often have dire consequences by allowing the cancer to spread.
In addition to wrongly interpretted test results, reasons for delay can include a failure by the GP to act promptly, a failure to undertake appropriate diagnostic tests and misdiagnosis as some other illness.
If you feel that you, a family member, or a friend may have been affected, please contact the Medical Accident team at Metcalfes who will be able to assist by phone on 0117 929 0451 or email arigby@metcalfes.co.uk to arrange a free initial consultation.
