What to do if You Have a Road Traffic Accident

  • Stay Calm!
  • Stop if there is any injury or damage to any person, vehicle or property (including dogs, cattle, sheep and horses).
  • Switch off your engine.
  • Unless anyone in your car is seriously injured, leave your car and go with your passengers (if any) to a place of safety.
  • Give your name, address, vehicle registration and insurance details to the police or to anyone else who you believe may need them.
  • Do not admit liability if asked if the accident was your fault.
  • Take down the other driver's details. If they refuse to give you this information, take a note of their vehicle registration number and contact the police immediately.
  • If possible, take the name and address of any person who saw the accident, or who can confirm the position of the vehicles involved.
  • If you are injured and you are unable to get these details, do not worry, but make sure an ambulance and the police are contacted immediately.
  • Keep a disposable camera in the car (use a camera phone if you have one) to photograph the damage, position of the vehicle(s) and all other road markings and signs.
