Statistics for 2009 - 2010 show an increase in claims in the Employment Tribunals.
The number of claims accepted by the Employment Tribunals has increased by 56% to the highest level on record. Employment Tribunal claims associated with unfair dismissal, breach of contract and redundancy increased by 17%. This is likely to be caused by the economic recession.
These statistics demonstrate that employees are becoming more aware of their rights to bring a claim and more willing to do so. With this in mind employers should ensure that they are following the correct procedures with regard to dismissal or redundancy.
