Act now on age laws

Small businesses have failed to take account of changes to age discrimination laws according to a wide-ranging survey carried out by the employment relations organisation ACAS.

The findings show that only 17% of small firms have changed their employment policies following the introduction of the legislation last year.

Among companies with fewer than 10 employees, the figure falls to only 6%.

ACAS chairperson Rita Donaghy says if age laws are ignored, tribunal cases could harm small companies.

Rita says: "Age discrimination can affect all employees, young and old, and to comply can be very simple and quick.

We are urging businesses to act now, helping them to introduce policies that minimise the risk of prosecution and to make employment decisions on the basis of talent and skills alone."
